Source-Connect Remote Recording FAQ
Welcome to my professional remote recording studio. Since 2020, I have specialized in directing and recording voice actors for high-end TV commercials via Source-Connect, with clients and creative teams joining live via Zoom. I have worked extensively with Animated Storyboards in London on a wide portfolio of commercial spots. This FAQ is designed to answer your questions about the process, technology, and my workflow.

What is Source-Connect and why do you use it?

Source-Connect is an industry-standard software that provides high-definition, low-latency audio streaming for professional remote recording sessions. Unlike standard video conferencing tools, Source-Connect transmits studio-quality audio, ensuring that what I record is what you hear, without the data compression that degrades sound on platforms like Zoom. This is crucial for the broadcast-quality audio required for TV commercials.

Yes, both parties need to have Source-Connect installed and activated to establish a direct, high-quality connection. There is a free 15-day trial available if you don't have a license.

While Source-Connect handles the pristine audio from the voice actor, Zoom is used exclusively for the creative team to listen to the session and view the picture. The team hears a "Zoom-quality" version of the audio for reference and sees the animated storyboards or picture streamed in real-time, allowing them to follow along with the performance and provide live direction.

No. The Zoom call is audio-only for the creative team. They listen to the session and watch the picture (animated storyboards or commercial visuals) that I stream to them. This keeps the focus on the performance against the picture while maintaining a clean, professional setup.

The client and creative team are on the Zoom call, where they hear the audio and see the picture in real-time. They can make requests, direct the performance, and ask for specific edits live, which I implement immediately. For final takes and critical listening, I switch the audio source in the DAW to Source-Connect for uncompressed quality.

Yes, I always record a high-quality backup of the session locally in my DAW. This is standard practice for Source-Connect sessions. Having a clean, local recording ensures we have a safety net in case of any internet glitches and provides a pristine file for fast delivery.

My workflow is designed for fast delivery. We can edit, comp, and process the audio during the session, and final files can often be delivered within minutes of the voice actor's last take. The exact timeline depends on the session's complexity and the extent of the requested revisions.

Absolutely. Clients can see and hear the rough mix against the picture during the session via Zoom. This is a key part of my service, allowing everyone to confirm timing, lip-sync (where applicable), and overall feel before the talent leaves the call. We can make adjustments in real-time to ensure the performance fits perfectly.

I have extensive experience with Source-Connect for major brands, including a wide portfolio of work for TV commercials for clients such as Acqua Panna, Airwick, Asahi, Baileys, Belvita, Chanel, Coca-Cola, Dove, Gillette, Guinness, Heineken, KitKat, Lays, Lipton, Milka, Nescafé, Nespresso, Pepsi, Pringles, Purina, San Pellegrino, Stella Artois, Tropicana, Viagra, Walkers, and many more.

The most common issues are usually related to audio routing on a Windows system, where an audio interface might struggle to be shared between Source-Connect and a DAW. However, with proper routing via a plugin like Source-Link or a setup using multiple outputs on your audio interface, these issues can be easily overcome.

I have extensive experience troubleshooting Source-Connect connections. I can often guide talent through basic setup issues or suggest alternative connection methods. For a smooth experience, I recommend voice actors have their Source-Connect and audio interface set up and tested before the session, using the Source-Connect echo test.

Yes, the standard setup allows for playback. This is an essential part of the remote workflow, as it allows the talent and the client to review takes in real-time to ensure correct pronunciation, emphasis, and overall performance are locked in before moving on.
